Smithfield P.D. gets new look
In August 2007, the patch was redesigned to more accurately
reflect our mission and heritage at the Smithfield Police Department. The Town
of Smithfield is a historic seaport that was incorporated in 1752. It is home to
the Fortune 500 conglomerate of Smithfield Foods. In the center of the patch is
the old Courthouse. This building, located in historic downtown, was the
judicial seat for Isle of Wight County until 1801. Symbolically, the Courthouse
further represents the application of fair and impartial justice that is
embodied in our Department’s mission. At the top of the seal is our statement of
“Community Partnership”. These words truly reflect our commitment that safety
and security require the community’s involvement at all levels. Further, it
reflects that our authority is a trust with the community that requires their
engagement and consent. The words Honor and Integrity are to the side of the
seal. These are values that reflect our commitment to the highest ethical
standards of conduct and performance. At the bottom are the icons of a ham and
peanut which constitute our historical heritage with the world famous Smithfield
Ham.
