Smithfield has the "best tasting water in Virginia"! A panel of judges recently announced at the 2003 Virginia Rural Water Association annual conference that Smithfield has the best tasting water in Virginia . Smithfield's water also finished in the top 5 of the best tasting water in the United States according to the National Rural Water Association. However a New Water Treatment Plant is being designed to reduce Naturally Occurring Fluoride levels to meet E.P.A. Standards

The Smithfield Public Utilities & Public Works Departments are responsible for the maintenance and improvements of public roads and right-of-ways (not including those owned by VDOT), water systems, and sewer systems. Mr. W. Russell Batten serves as the Superintendent of Public Utilities. Jeff Smith serves as the town's licensed waterworks operator. In 1999 the Town of Smithfield adopted a Utility Master Plan and performed a water and sewer rate study.
