Smithfield Public Works and Utilities Department
Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide quality service for Town residents and businesses, while safely and efficiently maintaining the Town’s infrastructure, which includes water and sanitary sewer systems, streets, sidewalks, street lights, stormwater systems, public buildings and grounds, etc.
Department Accreditation
The Town of Smithfield Public Works Department was awarded the prestigious American Public Works Association (APWA) Accreditation on November 12, 2014 making us the 97th agency to meet the requirements. We are the sixth agency in Virginia, the smallest agency in Virginia and the second smallest in the United States and Canada to have achieved this honor.
The APWA Accreditation program recognizes public works agencies that go beyond the public works industry’s nationally established, best management practices and indicates the department has met applicable accreditation documentation and practices. The accreditation process involves a thorough internal review of our agency, followed by an onsite accreditation visit whereby a team of reviewers examines our documentation and conducts interviews with selected agency staff as well as chief elected and appointed officials.
