Think you know everything about barbecue? Author Joseph Haynes will sign copies of his new book Virginia Barbecue: A History and share his knowledge with you from 9:30 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Smithfield Farmers’ Market. Books will be available for purchase.
The unique combination of vinegar, salt, pepper, oils and various spices forms the mouthwatering barbecue sauce first used by Virginia colonists which spread throughout the country. Today, authentic Virginia barbecue is regionally diverse and remains culturally vital. Haynes' book documents the delectable history of barbecue in the Old Dominion.
Ready to supplement this fascinating and delectable history are the Smithfield Inn and Taste of Smithfield. Because with all this talk of such tasty morsels, you’ll be in the mood for a nibble of your own.
The Smithfield Inn and Taste of Smithfield will supply amazing smells and samples. Smells are free, but for $5, guests can taste barbecue from each restaurant and vote for a favorite. Proceeds from the tasting will benefit the Isle of Wight County Museum.
