Mr. John Settle has been named as Community Development & Planning Director for the Town of Smithfield. Mr. Settle began employment with the Town in October of 2018 as the Planning & Zoning Administrator. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Historic Preservation from the University of Mary Washington, where he double-minored in Museum Studies and Urban Studies. Additionally, he earned a Master of Arts in Urban & Regional Planning and a Public History Certificate from Virginia Tech.
Mr. Settle is a native of the Virginia Tidewater; deciding to return to the area after serving as Planning & Zoning Administrator for the Town of Strasburg, Virginia. Previously, he served as the Environmental Planner & Codes Compliance Officer for Middlesex County, Virginia and interned with the Planning Departments of the Cities of Newport News and Virginia Beach.
“We are very fortunate to have someone of John’s education and professional experience to serve as the Community Development and Planning Director,” said Brian Thrower, Smithfield Town Manager. “John has done a fantastic job in his role as Planning & Zoning Administrator and will be a tremendous asset to the Town in this new capacity.”
Mr. Settle began in his new role on June 9, 2019. This is a newly-created position for the Town, replacing, in part, the position of Director of Planning, Engineering & Public Works. The Town will be recruiting for a Public Works & Utilities Director in the near future.
