The primary goal for economic development in Smithfield is to expand the Town's existing economic base by exploring economic development opportunities in the area of tourism, retail commercial and industry to strengthen the existing economy and to generate additional revenue and employment opportunities. Based on the allocation of uses to the Future Land Use Plan, the combination of several different categories (ranging from commercial to transitional office to light and heavy industrial) yields an approximate gross acreage of 473 acres within the Town which could be considered as feasible locations for commercial, industry, office or other employment-generating land uses.
