Smithfield has more than 300 businesses. Our local government strives to assist businesses by providing quality services and a customer - friendly environment. Businesses are assessed on annual Business Professional and Occupational License (BPOL) tax based on annual gross receipts.

Pay My Taxes?
Residents now have the ability to make payments online for Personal Property and Real Estate Taxes! Please note that online payments for business licenses, vehicle tags, parking tickets, and other such fees are not available at this time.

Obtain Town Records?
The Town of Smithfield operates under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requirements. All town records including records from the following offices and boards: Planning, Engineering, Treasurer’s, Town Manager’s, Town Clerks, Council, Board of Zoning Appeals, Board of Historic and Architectural Review, Planning Commission, Public Works (excluding police department) are managed through the Town Manager's office. Contact the Town Clerk at 757-365-9505.
Dispose of Trash?
The Town contracts with Bay Disposal and Recycling for residential refuse collection. The Town provides each residential address with one cart. Extra carts may be rented from Bay by calling 757-857-9700. Pick-ups are scheduled once a week (Monday’s for residents on West Side and Tuesday’s for residents on East Side).
Recycle?
The Town contracts with Bay Disposal and Recycling for residential recycling services. The Town provides each residential address with one cart. Extra carts may be rented from Bay by calling 757-857-9700. Pick-ups are scheduled once a week (Thursdays for residents on West Side and Friday's for residents on East Side).
Pay My Water Bill?
You can now make your water bill payments online, or you may pay them in person at Town Hall at 310 Institute Street, Smithfield Virginia 23430, and see the Water Dept or call 757-365-4254.

Report Street or Road Damage?
If you would like to report any street/road damage in the Town of Smithfield, please feel free to contact Wayne Griffin, the Town Engineer, at 757-365-4253.
Obtain a Zoning Permit?
Zoning Permits are required for the construction, renovation, or demolition or commercial buildings, homes, home additions, decks, sheds, fences, etc. Zoning Permit Applications are available at the Planning Department located at 310 Institute Street or you can download the PDF. Contact 757-365-4266 for more information.
