Mission Statement

While being ever mindful of the town's rich history and culture, it is our mission as representatives of the people to enhance the quality of life in the Town of Smithfield by working cooperatively with town staff, Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors, and the community for the purpose of promoting public health, safety, order, prosperity and other services. We are committed to providing the highest quality services and to meeting the present and future needs of the community in a fiscally responsible manner.

Council Committees

There are six committees: Police, Water and Sewer, Finance, Parks and Recreation, Public works and Public Buildings and Welfare. These committees are described in detail below. The proper committee will determine if the matter can be taken care of administratively or if it is a matter that must go before Town Council for consideration. Anyone who voices a concern or has an issue to discuss will be invited to the Council Committee meeting and/or Town Council meeting when that issue is to be discussed. Any matter of interest or concern can be placed on the Town Council agenda by contacting Lesley King at 757-365-9506. Council Committee Meetings are held on the fourth Monday and Tuesday of each month (unless otherwise noted) at the Smithfield Center.

Comprehensive Plan

Many forms, applications, and other documents are made available on this site in printable-downloadable format (PDF). Adobe Acrobat files (PDF) can be read using Acrobat Reader, which is available for free at the Adobe website. This format allows documents to be printed so that they look as they were intended to look. These documents can also be saved to your hard drive for later access. Once you view the file, choose "Save As" in your browser and select the desired location for the file.

Please note: the following documents and publications are subject to change.

(Adopted by Town Council 07/05/2022). Due to the large size of the files, all color pictures and maps are not included in the online version of the Comprehensive Plan.
