Zoning permit applications are available at the Planning Department located at 310 Institute Street. Or, you can download the Zoning Permit Application (PDF).

Primary Structures (residences) and Commercial Structures cost $75. All other permits cost $30. Only cash or checks are accepted. Checks should be made payable to "Town of Smithfield."

Yes. You also need a Building Permit from Isle of Wight County at 757-365-6213. You will need the following for a Zoning Permit:
- A completed zoning permit application.
- $30.
- A recent survey/plat of your property with the fence drawn on it. (For the current regulations on fences in Smithfield, please contact the Planning Department at 757-365-4200.

Zoning Permit
Yes. Regardless of the size of the shed or how it's built, a town zoning permit is required. If the shed is greater than 256 square feet, you also need a Building Permit from Isle of Wight County. Phone; 757-365-6213.

Yes, if your pool requires electrical service to operate it, a town zoning permit is required. You also need a Building Permit from Isle of Wight County. Phone: 757-365-6213. There may also be additional Building Code requirements for your swimming pools (i.e., fence, gate, etc.). Contact the Isle of Wight County Building Inspections to determine whether or not the type of pool that you intend on installing calls for additional requirements.
