The Smithfield Police Department is launching a new program called Virtual Neighborhood Watch. This program allows residents and business owners with video surveillance cameras to register their addresses with the police department. If a crime occurs in your neighborhood, the police can check the Virtual Neighborhood Watch database and ask those residents to check their videos for any evidence to help them catch the suspect. The information provided will always remain private, and participation in the program is entirely voluntary. Police will have no access to the camera system in any way, shape, fashion, or form. The Smithfield Police Department hopes to use this program to work with residents and businesses to fight crime. If you want to participate in this program, please call the Smithfield Police Department at (757) 357-3247, and they will help you fill out the form or answer any questions you might have. We look forward to partnering with the residents and businesses of Smithfield to keep our community safe and welcoming.
